3 Jul 2006 at 9:47pm ![]() 6 min - Jul 4, 2006 A better quality copy of this clip can be found at my photo site: www.antarcticimages.com Blog: www.frozensouth.com Time-lapse video filmed in Antarctica, in and around McMurdo Station and Scott Base. Each year the sun is below the horizon for 4 months in the middle of winter, and above the horizon for 4 months in summer. During the couple of months in between we have more-or-less normal days. Includes shots of auroras and the very rare polar stratospheric nacreous clouds, which form when ozone depleting gases crystallize in the upper atmosphere in the intense cold. Summer population is about 1200 people, winter about 200. This is just a small sample of an ongoing project to collect time-lapse imagery of Antarctica. I have taken over 1,000,000 individual photos and worn out a number of cameras that make up the collection of footage I have gathered so far over the last 6 years. Eventually a film will be released, keep an eye on my user page for more info in the future. Check out my other videos as well for more of life on the Ice. For those of you who have been asking about the music I used here, the first piece of music is "Whirl-Y-Reel" by Afro Celt Sound System, the second is "The Grand Finale" from the Edward Scissorhands soundtrack by Danny Elfman. (ANSMET = Antarctic search for meteorites) http://geology.cwru.edu/~ansmet/ ABSTRACT Every year since the late 70's the US National Science Foundation has supported a team of space scientists to search for meteorites in Antarctica. Why Antarctica? The polar desert environment best preserves these precious samples of other worlds, which include shattered planetesimals, fragments of asteroids, and even rocks from the Moon and Mars. In this talk, I will discuss the scientific importance of meteorites, and the methods used to recover them from the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. 23 Aug 2006 at 9:45pm ![]() 1 min - Aug 24, 2006 Filmed at McMurdo Station, where it is relatively sheltered by the surrounding hills. The teachers' preparation schedule includes training sessions on Europe's largest ice-cap in Norway and constant fundraising to earn the £10,000 they need to go. All this is undertaken while they hold down their full-time teaching jobs. Although the four teachers are excited about using the experience to inspire pupils back home, they begin to realise the toll that such an expedition will take on themselves and their families. 30 Jan 2008 at 7:33am 6 min - Jan 30, 2008 A windsurfing trip through the ice hell of the Antarctic Sea from the Movie 039Ayahuasca039 Director Thomas Miklautsch 10 Apr 2006 at 4:28pm 56 sec - Apr 10, 2006 Take a Zodiac ride to view a unique art gallery of Antarctica icebergs. Freezing temperatures battle against biologic metabolic functions. They also keep water in its solid, ice state, making the continent the driest "desert" on the planet - another challenge to life in this unforgiving environment. It is precisely for these reasons that Antarctica has come to be regarded as a laboratory for the inhospitable conditions that obtain extra-terrestrially in the solar system. As such, Antarctica has come to be known as the "closest place to Mars." 15 Sep 2006 at 3:00am 44 min - Sep 15, 2006 UFO Documentary from Russia May 2006, 'Secrets of the Third Reich II' (a Follow Up), amongst others about Nazi Bases in Antarctica (and much more) ... broadcasted in RUSSIAN MAINSTREAM MEDIA ... who can traslate this to me ? One experiment looks at the effects of cold on the human body, and how our bodies change and adapt to lowering temperatures. The other experiment follows the team of teachers as they aim to find the first lichens in the Ellsworth Mountain region of Antarctica. During the entire process, we gain an insight into how to conduct a proper, rigorous scientific experiment from start to finish. We see how important it is to record data accurately, and how difficult it can be to conduct proper science in a harsh environment such as Antarctica. 9 May 2008 at 4:15pm 30 min - May 9, 2008 Share the experiences of four British teachers as they undertake a four-week trip to Antarctica, carrying out scientific experiments in order to bring the results back to the scientific community and their pupils. One teacher investigates the effect of cold on the human body, another is trying to discover a type of lichen that is thought to exist in the area, but which has never been found. As time goes on, the trip takes a toll on the teachers both physically and mentally. We follow the expedition from beginning to end, taking a look at the personal highs and lows of living in the harshest continent on the planet. Despite the hardships they endure, the teachers are inspired by their adventure, but will their pupils show similar enthusiasm when the teachers return to the classroom and share the results of the experiments? 25 Apr 2006 at 5:14pm ![]() 30 sec - Apr 25, 2006 Guarana Antarctica Comercial.
